Anti-Illegal Immigration Activists Petition Recall Of Phoenix Mayor
Phoenix, AZ (AHN) - A group opposed to the influx of illegal Mexican immigrants to Arizona is seeking the ouster of Mayor Phil Gordon for allegedly not enforcing immigration laws.
American Citizens United (ACU) filed a petition Wednesday to create a political action committee. The group has 120 days to gather almost 24,000 signatures to force a recall of the mayor.
The number of signatures, the equivalent of one-fourth of votes cast in the last mayoral election, is the legal requirement to...

Illegal immigration and the law, What's the Popes Opinion?
The Pope’s heart may be in the right place but his comments about illegal immigration on his recent trip to the United States were off base.
The Pope is advocating amnesty for millions of illegal aliens in the United States in violation of immigration laws.
During his visit, a host of individuals who advocate illegal immigrants descended on the steps of the Vatican’s Washington liaison office seeking the Pope’s help to soften enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.
The Catholic pontiff has made amnesty a key issue in his papacy. During his visit with President Bush, he told the...

Groups rally to decry immigration order

Immigrants' rights groups are planning a rally at the State House to call on Gov. Don Carcieri to rescind his executive order that cracks down on illegal immigrants.
The rally is scheduled for Thursday, the same day protests are being held around the nation to demand comprehensive federal immigration legislation.
In Rhode Island, groups including the Center for Hispanic Advocacy and Policy and Ocean State Action say immigration reform is a federal responsibility, not a state one. They want an end to Carcieri's order.
They also want to stop legislation making its way through the General Assembly that would do...

5 Investigates Border Smuggling Town
Sheriff Joe Arpaio, federal immigration agents and new state laws are all trying to curb illegal immigration, but a CBS 5 investigation discovered a place that tries to make it easier for people to cross the border from Mexico into Arizona.
5 Investigates traveled to Altar, Mexico, a smuggler town a few hours south of the Valley.
Barely a blip on the map, Altar is the hub where would-be immigrants from all over Mexico gather before heading north into Arizona.
The town is located on a crossroad. The main drag connects Mexican border towns across the southwest, but the economic backbone of the community is illegal immigration. Even the town's baseball team is...

Immigrant rights activists join protests nationwide
Thousands of immigrants and activists gathered in cities across the country Thursday to demand comprehensive immigration reform, including citizenship opportunities for the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.
Turnout has fallen sharply since the first nationwide rallies in 2006, when more than 1 million people — at least 400,000 in Chicago alone — clogged streets and brought traffic to a standstill.
Activists hoping to re-ignite the immigration debate in time for the presidential elections say this year's efforts are focused less on protests and more on voter registration and setting an agenda for the next president.
Nevertheless, they planned to take to the streets from Miami to Dallas to Los Angeles for May Day protests.
"We come to let Washington know we're still here. We're still fighting," said Jorge Guzman, 34, as crowds swelled in...

Mexican charged with for 16 counts of human smuggling in modified vehicle
On April 22, at about 6:15 a.m., a Yavapai Sheriff's Office deputy stopped a green 1995 Dodge Ram pickup for speeding on the I-17 near Camp Verde. The deputy found that the driver, Edgar Ocampo, 28, was not licensed and was transporting 16 illegal aliens in the vehicle.
The deputy examined the vehicle and found six subjects in the truck's cab and 10 more in the cargo bed of the truck. Ocampo told the deputy that the passengers were his friends but he was unable to name anyone in the vehicle. He eventually admitted the passengers were here illegally from Mexico, like himself, and he was taking the group to Flagstaff to find work.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office was notified and after conducting a phone interview with Ocampo, authorized the detention of the 16 subjects and confirmed Ocampo was involved in human smuggling.
During a closer examination of the vehicle, the deputy found exposed wiring under the dashboard that connected to suspension components attached to the back of the vehicle. This modification allowed the driver to...

Its future uncertain, barrier on the border going up quickly

The U.S. fence along the Mexican border is less a wall than a stuttering set of blockades: half barrier, half gaps.
Americans are split pretty much the same way: half in favor, half against, passionate on both sides when it comes to the idea of erecting a wall to keep people from entering the country illegally.
It can seem a shaky foundation as the United States rushes to complete the fencing on nearly 700 miles of the border by the end of the year. That's when a new administration arrives in the White House with its own ideas about security, freedom, the 11 million illegal immigrants already here and the prospect of many more on the way.
Nearly half complete, the multibillion-dollar fence project stretches from the Pacific surf at Tijuana to the Gulf of Mexico near Brownsville, Texas. The messages it sends are...

Human smuggler gets 5 years in Jupiter Island incident
A Bahamian man who tried to smuggle 15 illegal immigrants onto Jupiter Island in September was sentenced to five years in federal prison Monday after pleading guilty to charges.
David Knowles, 45, the captain of the boat, pleaded guilty to three counts of bringing and harboring illegal aliens and two other similar charges were dropped at sentencing. Both the prosecution and defense recommended a five-year prison sentence and U.S. District Judge Jose Martinez imposed it along with three years of supervised release and a requirement he surrender to immigration authorities once his sentence is complete.
Knowles was accused of smuggling 15 illegal aliens from the Bahamas on Sept. 14. The group was captured on...

17 suspected illegal immigrants found on boat off San Diego
U.S. immigration authorities say they arrested 17 Mexican citizens Monday on suspicion of illegal immigration after finding them aboard a boat about 10 miles off the coast of San Diego.
Agents have identified one person believed to have piloted the smuggling boat, according to Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vince Bond.
The other 16 people 12 men and four women are in Border Patrol custody, Bond said. All were wearing life vests and there were no injuries.
Federal agents on a nighttime marine patrol spotted the 26-foot boat on their radar around 1 a.m. off Point Loma, due...
